HEAVY role playing game (RPG) influence - as much or more an RPG as a TBS, but the TBS system is outstanding, and story is off the charts excellent XCom and PP have excellent equipment systems that contribute to the tactical layer in a very big way.Įnjoyed greatly. I initially thought the tactical game was too simple but over time learned a lot of tips and tricks, and as the campaign evolved the tactical layer got more complex and interesting. W元 characters, factions and writing is good.Ī bit too light on both story and strategy layers for my tastes. If you like RPGs like Divinity series, Dragon Age, Baldur's Gate. Notable call out for excellent story/world and their work making the NPC squad members interesting in a TBS game. Also good, but for TBS veterans start at a high level of difficulty or you may become unchallenged by mid way thruĮnjoyed greatly. I would respect an argument to include squad build design / mix and development in strategy layer, evaluation, which would up.the score in the catagory significantly, but I am thinking more about player agency in base designs, development, tech tree navigation and resource acquisition/development & planning Time consuming/long, but that may be based on playing at Hero difficulty on first play thru. *Difficulty curve, balance, grindyness, interface, bugs. ![]() With some more support/development/mods it could have been something special. I think the game could have been great, but it landed pretty firmly in mediocrity. Think I played about 2/3rds of the game and didn't get a heavy or stealth/shotgun (can't remember the actual class names.) Meanwhile there were 2 named characters of the same class. ![]() I always felt like the correct answer was to bring all your unique heroes, but they weren't even well dispersed across the classes. My other issue was that there were a number of named characters/hero's and then generic soldiers as well. They had interesting mission types with different objectives, brought some new and interesting mechanics, but the game felt shallow somehow. ![]() Sadly I was wrong, the game really felt like it was missing something. I thought it wouldn't be a big deal, since the tactical layer of X-Com is where most of the fun is for me.
